How we verify your identity and income — without holding your full SSN

How we verify your identity and income — without holding your full SSN

Quick answer

We use the same identity and income checks every U.S. bank uses — required by federal law. We only ask for the last 4 digits of your SSN, never the full number. The application credit check is soft — it does not affect your score.

The deal in 60 seconds

  • We follow KYC (Know Your Customer) rules under the Patriot Act — every U.S. lender must.
  • We only ask for the last 4 digits of your SSN, not the full number.
  • The application uses a soft credit check — does not affect your score.
  • A hard check happens only after you accept a loan offer (drops score 5–10 points temporarily).
  • We never sell your data.
  • You can request a copy of everything we hold on you at any time.

The 4 identity pieces we match

What we ask Why we ask it Where it’s matched
Legal name Match to credit file + government ID Experian / Equifax / TransUnion
Date of birth Confirm you are 18+ and the right person Same bureaus
Current address Confirm residency + lender state licensing Bureaus + utility records
Last 4 of SSN Pull the correct credit file Bureaus

That is it. We never ask for mother’s maiden name, security questions, or your social media accounts. If anyone claiming to be us asks for those — it is a phishing attempt.

Why only the last 4 of your SSN?

Your full SSN is the master key to your financial life. The fewer systems that hold it, the safer you are. The last 4 digits are enough for the credit bureaus to find your file. Your full SSN is only collected by the actual lender (not LoanVouch) at the very end, through their own secure portal — so it never sits in our database.

How income verification works

At the application stage you self-report your income. We use that to match you with lenders whose loan sizes fit your budget. Before the lender funds the loan, they verify it with documents. What is typical:

Your income type What the lender asks for
W-2 employee Last 2 pay stubs OR last 60 days of bank deposits
1099 / contractor Last year’s 1099 + 3 months of bank statements
Self-employed / business owner 2 years of tax returns + year-to-date P&L
Retirement / Social Security Award letter + bank statements showing direct deposit
Disability / VA Award letter + 3 months bank statements
Mix of sources Documents covering each source

Most lenders can verify W-2 income in under an hour via Plaid or The Work Number. Self-employed verification takes 1–2 days.

What if your details don’t match?

Mismatches happen all the time and they are fixable. Common ones:

  • Recent name change (marriage / divorce) — send a marriage certificate or court order.
  • Recent move (under 90 days) — send a lease, utility bill, or new bank statement.
  • Same name as a parent (Jr / Sr) — add the suffix in your application.
  • Old address still showing on credit file — submit a CFPB-style update request. We can send you the template.

If we flag any mismatch, we tell you exactly which field and what document fixes it. No vague “verification failed” dead ends.

What we never do

  • We never pull a hard credit inquiry without your explicit consent.
  • We never sell, rent, or share your data with marketing companies.
  • We never ask for your bank account password (lenders use Plaid for read-only access).
  • We never charge an application fee.
  • We never email asking you to “re-verify by clicking this link.” That is phishing — report it.

FAQ

Will applying actually hurt my credit?

The soft pull at application does NOT affect your score. The hard pull after you accept an offer drops it 5–10 points temporarily and recovers in 1–3 months.

How long do you keep my data?

7 years after your loan closes (required by federal record-keeping rules). You can request deletion of non-required data at any time by emailing support.

What if I make a mistake on the application?

Honest mistakes (forgot a recent debt, typo in income) get a chance to correct. Wildly inaccurate self-reported income vs documented income = automatic decline.

Can I see what the credit bureaus have on me?

Yes — get your free annual report at AnnualCreditReport.com (the only government-authorized source — others charge or upsell).

What if my data is breached?

We carry liability insurance. In the unlikely event of a breach, affected users would get free credit monitoring + identity theft resolution for 24 months at no cost.

Can I apply without providing my SSN at all?

No. Federal KYC law requires it for any loan application in the United States.

Do you share my info with other lenders if I’m declined?

Only if you opt in to be re-matched. Default behavior: your data is only sent to the specific lender you selected.
